a tale of friendship, romance, and love of literature

At that place are so many levels on which one can bask the curiously titled The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Club (2018)that describing the film is a challenge. Like many British menstruum dramas, it has an ballsy quality in how it reflects on the world as it was in the 1940s. Sumptuously filmed and beautifully acted, it blends historical insight into a finely-crafted tale of mystery and romance.

Other than history buffs, nigh people would be unaware that German troops occupied the British Channel Islands of Guernsey and Bailiwick of jersey in 1940-45. Many Isle children were evacuated to England merely prior to the occupation and the invasion encountered nigh no military resistance. Nether Nazi rule, many Islanders were sent to forced labour and concentration camps in Germany and all farm produce was confiscated for military use. The moving-picture show opens with a group of Islanders out after curfew, having enjoyed an illicit roast pig and dwelling-brewed gin even though strict food rationing was in place. Facing firsthand arrest, they concoct an excuse about being members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society who have been enriching their minds while feeding on potato peels, as the Fuhrer would want. From this serendipitous moment, a local tradition is born.

Switching to 1946, we meet Juliet Ashton (Lily James) a successful writer living comfortably in London and pondering ideas for her side by side book. Pursued past a wealthy American suitor, she enjoys the empty-headed glamour of a British loftier guild that is rebuilding after the state of war. A alphabetic character from a member of the Guernsey Literary Social club excites her interest and she shortly travels to the Island to learn more. She becomes enchanted with its idyllic village life and rural tranquillity and how each member of the Society has their own wartime story to tell. At that place is besides a new romance simmering where least expected, too as guarded secrets and strong resistance to a volume beingness written about them.

This simple plotline understates the multiple sub-stories that are a montage of war-time Guernsey, including dark themes of Nazi collaboration, the trauma of children separated from families, and uplifting themes about how literature tin bring people together across time and infinite. The original novel on which the picture is based was framed effectually letters between Juliet and Order members, so the film's timeframes shift oft simply with seamless continuity. There are several charming exchanges well-nigh writers and novels that yous would expect from lovers of literature. The filming aesthetic evokes the era with authenticity, while Lily James and the ensemble bandage are superb.

Some might say that this story is told through a soft-focus lens, mediated through the gentility of Juliet'southward privileged life and self-indulgent marvel virtually the lives of others. That may be so, but her narrative perspective accentuates the world of difference between state of war-fourth dimension London and Guernsey. Without such insights, the story would be just a warm-hearted melodrama. Merely the motion-picture show offers much more that. Information technology is an engaging detective story, a study of survival under wartime occupation, and a tale of friendship, romance, and beloved of literature.

Not Guernsey!

I declare a vested involvement as I am a Guernseyman who has lived here all my life. The film is very entertaining, well acted and interesting. I recommend information technology as a love story with a Guernsey historic background that is reasonably authentic. Sadly the picture was not shot in Guernsey for various reasons and although the scenery is lovely to expect at it's not as beautiful every bit our Isle. Come and visit Guernsey and enjoy our Isle.

A nicely broiled pie that isn't cooked all the way through only has enough filling to make it edible

Saw 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' as a fan of period drama, as someone who is trying to watch every bit many films of the year equally possible and who likes a lot of the actors in the cast. It's keen enough seeing such talent on their own, and fifty-fifty more of a delight to accept so much talent together.

The idea for the story was also very interesting and it was nice to meet a film based in a adequately under-explored period of wartime history. The title was not hugely appetising though. Seeing the film with my sister yesterday, found 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Skin Pie Order' to be a pleasant and well done if falling curt of peachy flick. It is engrossing enough and should have plenty to appeal to a reasonable sized audience, it may entreatment more to older audiences simply those who want to know more than virtually this period of wartime history or want to gain some knowledge of information technology should go something out of it.

Non a perfect film by all means. Will admit to having a good idea of, well actually knowing, how 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' was going to finish well earlier it concluded, with the dear-related aspect of the story being telegraphed a little too early.

Didn't care for the character of Marker. Despite him serving some point to the story, with a crucial role of the plot beingness resolved with his interest, he was rather one-dimensional and didn't accept much personality or anything to make i endear to him (he likewise behaves similar a wiggle subsequently). Within the flow, he seemed a petty out of place. The same goes for how he is played. Matthew Goode's part was too on the underwritten side only he was much easier to like.

Pacing at times could have been tighter, some draggy spots hither and at that place.

All the same, there is an awful lot to like about 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society'. The production values and cast are the biggest selling points. It'south a beautifully shot flick with very handsomely evocative production and costume design that does give ane a real sense of catamenia.

Even improve are the cast, with Lily James a charming and very rootable lead and Michiel Huisman cutting a handsome presence. Their chemical science is warm and tender. Tom Courtenay is understated and amusing, having one of the film'due south all-time lines near the end, while Penelope Wilton equally the most rounded supporting character is middle-wrenching. Jessica Brown Findley is also potent.

Mike Newell does solidly directing, not exceptional merely he skilfully stops 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Club' from being besides frothy or as well intense. The script is thought-provoking, with some tension and a lot of emotion. The terminate credits were a lovely touch. A good job is washed showing what living in the period and before was like while not being too one-sided. At that place is genuine emotional power here, with a back-story and primary conflict, centring around the consequences of meaning loss, that provides a lot of poignancy and promise.

I does feel the love and friendship between the characters and there are some nice revelations along the way in solving this intriguing story where i hopes for a happy outcome to the mystery/mission dominating it. The music, when used, is neither intrusive or too low-key.

In summary, good, pleasant and engaging film that could accept been even meliorate. 7/10 Bethany Cox

This is my ultimate comfort movie for the dark times.

"Our Friday night book club became a refuge to united states. A private freedom to experience the world growing darker all effectually you, but you merely need a candle to run across new worlds unfold. That is what we establish in our society."

I loved this so much with every cobweb in my beingness. I just finished the volume before this month and finally sabbatum down to sentry the movie. It was so beautiful and absolutely perfect. The characters all felt like family and the story kept me on the edge of my seat, simply like the volume did. I strongly recommend this because it is such a good story and feels like a warm hug. Dawsey owns my heart and Mark tin exit.

English charm

This motion picture accommodation of a popular novel may exist a mouthful of a title, yet the picture show is made with heart and soul and its very entertaining. It is a sweet, well-shot and well-acted nostalgic mail service-war drama. Lily James does well as she can with her rather unlikely character, the supporting bandage are solid and the script is skilful too. Fans of former-fashioned romances need await no further. The thoroughly delightful cast, the handsome period design make too a good enough picture show simply the film is directed past Mike Newell, who made 1 of the greatest romantic movies, "Four Weddings and a Funeral" so we expected fifty-fifty more. The issue is a moving-picture show that, while perfectly enjoyable with its English charm, becomes a nostalgic and superficial every bit the title suggests it is going to be.

expect! no superheroes? no big action scenes? PASS!

Kidding, this was truly such a hidden gem, someone recommended i picket it and i did, now i tin can't exist more grateful. It'south ane of those films yous observe yourself still thinking most days later on watching, i find myself vehement up a couple of times throughout the film, which is something i oasis't done this entire twelvemonth. Filled with charming and lovable characters, shot in a beutiful isle with beautiful scenery, heartwarming story nearly dear, family unit and friendship, now i find myself tempted to read the novel simply to spend more than time with those characters, i feel like a mini series formula would have been meliorate for this adoptation of the novel though, rather than a 2 hours moving-picture show which leaves y'all just wanting more. Anyhow, i highly recommend this if you are tired of all the blockbuster movies like me and just want a simple lite hearted picture show to enjoy.

Exist warned this pic contains acting!

I was intrigued past the title so thought give it a go. disappointingly there were no special effects, explosions or alien monsters just a simple story relayed to u.s. by actors of all things, considering of all this it will not qualify for any awards other than my own lowly stance. I laughed I cried, became angry and gave it the honor of the best pic I have seen for a long time, whatsoever tosh other people may say nigh this tale I enjoyed it, so lets have some more films with a story to tell without the bangs and bloodbaths

Watched this on Netflix, primarily for the cracking cast. A cute pic about love and courage. A slap-up script and the acting is superb. This is a hidden gem. A must scout.

Simply beautiful

23 April 2018 The Second Picture show of Selection at The Plaza Dorchester Tonight - The Guernsey Literary and Tater Skin Pie Lodge. This is a gripping story of 1 group of people on the Channel Island of Guernsey during the German occupation of earth war 2. Sympathetically told, this story shares the horrors that this Island of people went through and how their compassion could lead to their downfall. Bringing together some wonderful actors, the film is set in 1946 with flashbacks to the war years. A writer chosen Juliet Ashton is drawn to the island by the chance encounter of a farmer and a volume that in one case belonged to her. What follows is a tale of her struggle to observe their stories and the dilemma that faces her on whether to publish their very individual experiences or not. It is too a story of love, and of survival. Beautifully shot with scenery well matched to the emotion, this moving picture is a joy to spotter. I oasis't read the book yet only I can't wait to outset.

I'm so glad I found this

Information technology isn't often that I get to spend time with characters that I care near, in stories that both motion me and make me laugh, fix in places that I have never visited before but wish, when the lights come upward, that I had more than time to spend there.

I never read the book. I happened upon this past accident and decided to give information technology a few minutes and run into if it was worth watching later when I came home from dinner with friends. I never got to that dinner.

Faultless example of how to make a good film.

Maybe the best film I've seen this twelvemonth. Lily James is non simply a charismatic presence on the screen, she has both an outward and inner beauty that currently is hard to friction match. Based on a best selling novel, this film has not merely top notch interim right down to a iv year sometime girl but wonderful dialogue, an intriguing story of some mystery, beautiful scenery and tight direction without whatsoever backlog shots. Without giving anything abroad I felt myself willing Ms James to do the right matter and what a convincing actress she's turned out to be after first entrancing us walking down that staircase in Downton Abbey if you saw that. As a footnote, wait out for at least three other actors from Downton. I loved this pic and rarely give ten stars.

A cute romance set in the Brit Channel Islands of WWII.

"Do you suppose it's possible for u.s. to already belong to someone earlier we've met them?" Juliet Ashton (Lily James)

The Guernsey Literary Society and Potato Peel Pie Society will make you long for a permanent return of the onetime-fashioned, tear-jerking, gorgeously photographed war-drama romance. Together with the similar Summerland in recent Netflix release, Guernsey displays the Brits' gift for crafting melodrama and morality in the spirit of the rambling novels of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and a host of 19th century writers without peer.

To facilitate joyful tears, director Mike Newell, who made his proper name with Four Weddings and a Funeral, casts the incomparable Lily James as writer Juliet Ashton in mail service-state of war London; her success at crafting romantic tales and biographies (Ann Bronte, no less) brings her to Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands occupied in WWII by Nazis because, although a cocky-governing dependency of the British crown, it is closer to Europe than England. She is open to the society's tale of survival under Germany's thumb and to the thrill of writing Guernsey's tale of liberation.

One tension comes from her connection with three men, each love completely different, bringing her to fulfillment in sometimes heartbreaking ways. The story's glory is the depth of her feeling and the challenges to limited her love in ways that exercise non hurt just edify. Add to that a detective story that subtly weaves a motif of gender equality.

Conflicts arise, and not just with the Nazis, although the imprisonment of a whole population by evil occupiers begs a comparing with our global pandemic, whose ruthless appropriation of our freedom promises to occupy longer than Nazis ever could. However, a writer and soul like Juliet inevitably can free a population and herself.

Filmed on the coasts of Guernsey, Cornwall, and Devon, Guernsey Literary has all a lover of the romantic story and smashing cinematography could want. To call it overly-romantic is to place its strength-in a contemptuous world such as ours, a lyrical lift is welcome, and done too as this, it is to welcome just another example of high art.

Very deliberately paced and lovely to watch.

The story begins in London in 1946. At present that the war is over, Juliet Ashton is a acknowledged author and she should be happy at present that she's get engaged to a rich and handsome American soldier. But she seems a bit lost despite her success. Ane matter that piques her interest is a letter of the alphabet she's received from Guernsey (one of the Channel Islands off the coast of France). It'southward from a man who is looking for a volume and who is part of the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Gild...a book club consisting of virtually a half dozen members. Instead of just sending the man the book, she decides to become to Guernsey and run across this book club. However, although they loved hosting her, there is some sort of cloak-and-dagger virtually this group...a undercover that Juliet is adamant to detect out for herself.

The biggest praise in this film probably goes to the managing director, as the story is uncomplicated but Mike Newell manages to make the most of it. Some lovely performances, great pacing and a lovely script all work together to tell a story that really claw you...and if you lot like romances, you're certain to enjoy this picture show.

By the way, i of the best parts most story is its setting. Few Americans know anything nigh Guernsey and I enjoyed learning near the German occupation of the island during the state of war. Very interesting.

Information technology's a well written story, and beautifullly shot, an emotional moving movie. A love story is the sub plot , to the main plot of nazi occupied channel island ..unrequited love , dear found on a journeying to discover the truth of what really happened during the occupation in WW2 . A good film . More just a love story .

Decent mindless fun

The picture starts off swell, information technology really sucks you in right at the get-go and even manages to go the emotions flowing as yous feel for the characters and the circumstances you find them in. The plot does really well until about half style through the movie and and then it starts to muddle around and the pace slows downward significantly and thus my emotional attachment to the characters. At the end of the solar day it is still a practiced picture show, just wish it was trimmed a flake and possibly remove about 15 minutes so it flows a flake better. The main honey story is also about every bit cliche every bit it can perhaps become, but I suppose that is somewhat expected with this genre.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Alert: Spoilers

It is not often that a love novel can be adapted so originally and yet so faithfully. A unique and rather wonderful feel.

Juliet Ashton (Lily James) struggles under the trauma and horror of Mail-Earth-War-2 London until a letter puts her into contact with Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman;) a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Club. Soon enough, she finds herself visiting the island and hearing the stories of condolement, love, horror and pure resilience from Guernsey's eccentric inhabitants.

Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows' novel, on which this is based, brought to life one of many untold stories from the War. That story being the NAZI occupation of the English Isles. Writing in the grade of letters, information technology is piece of cake to come across how the novel became a personal exploration of the power of storytelling. Indeed, the literary society is a group of friends using reading and friendship equally a means of escaping their war-torn state of affairs. Newell is very aware of these powerful themes and works wonders to bring them to the screen.

Much of the film is made up of Guernsey'due south characters recounting their stories to Juliet, accommodated by flashbacks. There is no minimum of truth poured into these tales to brand them relevant and rather against. What ties them all together is the resilience of their friendship through these harsh times and what this raw bravery truly accomplished.

Abreast these recollections is an onetime-fashioned dearest and promise story. Juliet is quick to fall for the island of Guernsey and the friends she finds there. At a fourth dimension when the people of Guernsey needed new honey and support, she provides it with flair. In many ways, this is a story of finding promise out of trauma and love when y'all take nix else left.

Even the cinematography of the motion picture resembles these morals. London is grey on the outside and artificially coloured in any delights in presents. Guernsey on the other hand, is presented with rolling mountains and mighty waves crashing against the shore. A breath of fresh air for Juliet and an opportunity for a new beginning for her as much as the club.

Lily James balances realism, horror and promise in her performance as Juliet and her relationships with fellow actors are a credit to her talents. So many actors requite wonderous performances that it would be incommunicable to name them all withal Jessica Brownish Findlay needs acknowledging as Elizabeth. Her graphic symbol serves as an arc of hope during the actual Occupation and she delivers marvellously.

Perchance the nearly original aspect of the film comes during the credits. Playing an audio-recording of a meeting of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society brings the movie back to its core roots and ties up the rest of the film to a nice conclusion.

Wise, witty, confronting and yet full of heart, The Guernsey Literary and Irish potato Peel Pie Guild is a real and wonderful story. The only warning that must be brash to viewers: apparently potato peel pie is not as delightful equally the film. Avoid consumption!

Beautiful Adaptation of the book!

I loved this picture show!! Having read the volume and information technology being one of my all time favourite books I was a piffling wary of the film, as they often don't do the book justice. Still, this is an exception! I thought it was beautifully made and the casting was brilliant with great chemistry betwixt them. The only thing that did let it down was one of, what I felt, was a larger plot from the book being left out. It would have made it complete to take the catastrophe and how the ending happened stayed more true to book, simply it was still a beautiful ending and would highly recommend to anyone!

A London author forms a bond with the members of a book club on the island of Guernsey

British and French troops fighting Nazi Deutschland suffer a stunning defeat in May 1940 on mainland Europe. Germany invades the Channel Islands, livestock is impounded and a dark curfew imposed.

Late one night, Elizabeth (Jessica Brown Findlay) Eben (Tom Courtenay) Isola (Katherine Parkinson) and Dawsey (Michiel Huisman) are noisily making their way dwelling after feasting on a roasted pig that Amelia (Penelope Wilton) has hidden from the invaders. A blinding headlight terrifies the friends and a group of soldiers wielding automobile guns prepare to abort the group for existence out later dark.

Quick-thinking Elizabeth offers the suggestion that they are merely returning abode from a meeting of their volume club. She fumbles around for a name ... and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Gild is built-in.

The islanders eagerly take the opportunity to see regularly to hash out any books they tin lay their hands on.

The meetings proceed later the state of war. The friends wish to add together to their library and Dawsey writes to Juliet Ashton (Lily James) a name he'south plant inside a volume by Charles Lamb, requesting the name of a London book shop that might stock further books by that author.

Juliet, a successful writer with a bestseller recently published, is struggling to find inspiration for her side by side book. She'due south intrigued by the curiously named Guernsey Literary & White potato Pie Peel Society and - equally one does on the spur of the moment - flies off to Guernsey to meet its members.

The movie is based on a novel past Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrows that sold 7.5 million copies worldwide. Eben, in the film, is an constructing of 3 characters in the book: the fisherman, the postmaster and the islander who thought upwardly the recipe for the very showtime potato peel pie.

The Guernsey Literary & Tater Peel Pie Order is a mannerly, feel-good romantic drama. There's much to admire: a practiced story-line, splendid acting, unobtrusive music, a mystery to unravel, touches of sense of humor and a few emotional, teary, tissue-dabbing moments. It's also anticipated, minimises the blood and gore from the shipping attacks in the re-enactments and, at just over 2 hours, overstays its welcome.

Satisfying

Alarm: Spoilers

In 1946, newly successful author Juliet follows upwardly correspondence to investigate the curiously named Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Order, created during the German language occupation of the Channel Islands. But behind the story of the Gild lies another story...

Lily James plays Juliet in this gentle just thoughtful period drama. A well-rounded cast all play well, with Penelope Wilton excelling as a woman inundation with a variety of hurts.

I don't want to say more than: rather I would encourage people to meet a motion picture which kept me wondering about the answers to questions raised as the movie went on.

Information technology is beautifully filmed in locations which one would similar to think are authentic, even though they are not.

Overly sentimental and predictable romance

I watched this mistakenly thinking it was going to exist a historical drama, and boy was I incorrect.

Rich city girl that has it all, including a sophisticated fianée and a gay best friend goes away to spend a few days with simpler folk in the country side where she meets the true dearest of her life.

Does that story sound familiar? Sure it does, it's the plot of a dime a dozen romance movies and this ane's non really whatever difference. Whatsoever historical drama is served upwardly purely in the interest of furthering the romance plot and non a single thing comes equally a surprise in this overly sentimental moving-picture show that is 100% anticipated from commencement to finish.
